Hello!  I have been away from my computer for a while. Here is a quick update on what I've been  doing. School field trips to the environmental education center finished at up June 6th. We had a very busy season. Most days I hiked between 2 to 5 miles which was most welcome after a long winter.

On my last day of teaching at the environmental center (located at Camp Lutherlyn) I found out a craft director was need for summer camp. I said I could do it and was hired on the spot. Last week I set up the craft cabin which is next to the potter's cabin. Bob the potter in residence was conducting an experiment. I had to join in!

Bob and some others (I don't know for sure who) decided they wanted to try firing clay in an open fire pit. I quickly made the boat pictured above. Everyone else had made pots days before I found out about the project, my joining was a last minute thing.

A pit was dug in the ground, the pots were placed inside and a fire was built on top. The fire was fed wood for a little over an hour leaving a thick layer of hot coals covered all the clay pieces.

Next, a large piece of metal was placed over the pit for 24 hours.

The pots uncovered! We will wash the soot off after the pots after they cool down. My boat is the fourth pot in on the left. A small piece of clay broke off the rim. I can't wait to pick it up and exam the results, but that will have to wait for I am at the beach for a few days.

Wild pony pictures will be posted soon!

Have a great day and stop back soon!
