Last night at The Bottlebrush Gallery for the Arts, I attended the Woman's Circle group meeting. This time I was a student, I taught the class last month. MJ, the owner of the Gallery never lets the group know what they are going to be making ahead of time. That way no one can decide "they can't do it" before they try.
Last night it was all about abstract art and oil pastels. Both-- out of my comfort zone.
We were asked to bring a photo of ourselves. I think I was the only one who did...
( the other turned up with photos of family members...why didn't I think of that!)

As I am usually the one taking the photos in my family,
there were not a lot of pictures of me to be found.
Of course I waited until the last possible moment to look for a photo.
Finally I found this one of me at an art show.

What we did was outline all the shapes with a black Sharpie marker.
Then, with the aid of carbon paper, traced the shapes on to a piece of watercolor paper.
Next, we filled in the spaces with oil pastels, blending with our fingers.
Since I had a lot of blank space, I added frames around my photo.
( my photo was 5x7, the watercolor paper was 13x10...left a lot of white background)
Easy fun project.
So glad I went!

Other News,    Excited to be going to see Porgy and Bess tonight. Last month we saw Wicked. It was cold that night, tonight might be even colder. The cold temps make it hard for one to want to leave their warm home after dark. It was -10 degrees this morning.
The weather forecasters are saying we are in for 10-12 inches of snow this weekend.
Ready for Spring!  Dang Groundhog!!!
( winter has to end soon...)
Keep warm and stop back soon!

  1. That's a really cool technique, I really want to play around with it. And I love the class philosophy of not knowing what the lesson will be. Our preconceived notions can be our biggest obstacles.

  2. Still life with family....good take on reducing the white space by creating the frame within a frame....xox

    1. Frames took away the white space, and gave me something to do. I was finished long before the others. I do think I will keep going with this process. I think it will be good for when your own ideas are blocked. Creative, but will a little help.
