Book for Mail Art

Mail Art

Ryosuke Cohen

Ryosuke Cohen is a Japanese artist, thinker and communicator. I have been lucky enough to participate in several of his Brain Cell Projects. Cohen sent two copies of  project #1025 to the Evans City Public Library's two mail art shows held last fall.

A Brain Cell Project is a collaboration of many artist. Cohen merges all the art together on to one large sheet of paper. He then mails a copy to all the artist along with a list of names and addresses of these artists. Many of the artist then exchange mail art using this list.

If you have never participated in one of these projects but receive a copy of the Brain Cell in the mail, this is your invitation to join. Okay, now what? you might ask. You, the artist, then send a small piece of artwork to Cohen. It can be original, or a print of your artwork- like a stamp.

Here is an example of a Brain Cell Project.
Plus Orion Soup
A place to discuss topics such as space, atoms and art.

Ryosuke Cohen held a Mail Art Show at the
Karuizawa New Art Museum

He then wrote a book about mail art and featured the artwork displayed at the museum.

My woodblock print of a fish is on page 116!

Here is a better look!

When I received the book in the mail it was a complete surprise.
Mail art is about artist sharing art. Goodwill.
There is never a jury or prize.
The artwork is not sent back to the artist.
Often I have no idea if it made it to its destination or anything about the mail art show where it was displayed.

Being a mail art artist is exciting, you never know what will show up in your mailbox!
